Crowd at the Pitchfork Music Festival 2017, 6/14/17
I recently hit Chicago to cover the Pitchfork Music Festival 2017 for X1051. Check out my rundown of the action here.
Mikey Mike (Image via http://www.facebook.com/mikeymikemusic)
Mikey Mike is a hero we can believe in. “Doin’ Me” seems to be his mission statement. The song was recently featured on X1051‘s neXtNOW. Over a Rick Rubin-produced beat, Mikey Mike waxes poetic about what he is looking for in life. It’s nice to see an artist that is goal-oriented and believes in himself. Times are tough and confusing these days. Mikey Mike’s vibe and outlook speaks to the way a lot of people feel.
Lyrically, Mike covers a lot of ground about who he is and what he wants from the future. I’d vote for him if he ran for office (#MikeyMike2020 y’all). “Fuck what they say, I’m doin’ me!” Well said. Good for you, Mikey Mike, good for you!
I chatted it up live with Stacy Ryder and Shawn Quinn of X1051 at the recent Everclear show at CrossroadsKC. We discussed a case of mistaken identity.
Vertical Horizon at CrossroadsKC, 5/28/17
Vertical Horizon recently hit CrossroadsKC with a set focused on their ’90s jams. I covered the show for X1051. Check out this live version of the classic “Everything You Want.”
Everclear at CrossroadsKC, 5/28/17
Everclear recently rocked CrossroadsKC with a full performance of their album So Much for the Afterglow. I covered the show for X1051. Check out this live version of the classic “Father of Mine.”
Wonder Woman Cosplayer at Comicon 2017, 4/30/17
I had the honor of covering Planet Comicon 2017 for X1051. At one point, our crew got to chatting with a woman in costume as Wonder Woman. She had shown up early to Municipal Auditorium for the cosplay parade.
Our morning show host, Shawn Quinn, asked what kind of music she liked. “I like a lot of different music,” she said. “I like music that I hear around. I really like the Wonder Woman theme song. It gets me pumped up.” What an unexpected response.
“What’s your name?”
“Wonder Woman.”
“No, really.”
We eventually got her real name out of her.
She explained how she became interested in taekwondo because Wonder Woman did martial arts. She is training to become proficient with every martial arts weapon, because Wonder Woman is also proficient with every weapon. While talking, she nonchalantly twirled a kendo stick. It was clear she meant business. No word yet on if she’s saving up for a down payment on an invisible plane.
It’s inspiring to meet people that are so passionate. To go from being a fan of a superhero to actually practicing martial arts takes things from fantasy to reality really quickly. Good for you, Wonder Woman! Beast it out there!
I recently covered Planet Comicon 2017 for X1051. I am a big wrestling fan, so you know the #StreetBeast had to mix it up with NWL KC.
