Martin Sexton:
Soul Man
Martin Sexton is a singer/songwriter know for his soulful voice and amazing vocal range. He blew away the crowd at Wakarusa by performing solo (switching between playing an acoustic and electric guitar). Sexton won the National Academy of Songwriters’ Artist of the Year Award in 1994.
Did you enjoy playing Wakarusa this year?
I wish I could have enjoyed it, but because of flight delays showing up 20 minutes after my start time then leaving immediately after my set to get to Minneapolis threw a wrench in my gears. Although I did enjoy the energy of the sun-happy audience.
You are known for writing on the road. How does your writing process work when you are on tour?
Basically while out on the highway of life I’m a collector. I collect memories, I collect old things , I collect snapshots in my mind’s eye of characters I observe or meet. Whether they are waitresses at a roadside café in Newport, Tennessee or a spirited, sparky promoter in Fargo or whatever, I tend to let these stew and at some point weave them into my music.
What has been your most embarrassing moment onstage?
The things that embarrass most don’t really affect me, I think because I make mistakes or faux pas so often, I’ve developed a certain immunity to it and I’ve learned to embrace those mistakes and incorporate them into the show.
What artist would you love to tour with?
I’d love to tour with Led Zepplin, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles.
Describe yourself in three words.
Sexy mother fucker.
How do you want Martin Sexton to be remembered?
