The Bloody Beetroots are one of the most innovative acts in all of dance music. The Italian group’s hard-hitting beats have pummeled dancefloors worldwide. Producer Bob Rifo recently wrote in to discuss their production methods, Herbie Hancock and advice to up-and-coming DJs.

Do you remember the first dance record you heard?
Yes, it was “Planet Rock” by Afrika Bambaata & The Soulsonic Force.

What do you use to produce tracks?
Cubase 5.

How has your sound evolved since you began producing?
Using more and more analogical stuff.

How old were you when you first started Djing?
21 years old.

Where did you DJ your first gig?
In a bar in Venice.

How did the concept for touring with a live band come together?
I needed to develop an idea.

What’s been the craziest gig you’ve played?
There have been a few iffy situations! The last gig in Manchester was great!

Are there any dance records that you always find yourself listening to?

What do you think is the most overrated style of dance music?
Electro…

What advice would you give to DJs and producers just starting out?
Never forget your roots.
